Abstract: This dissertation will explore the psychological aspect of refereeing. This is a quantitative study, supported by relevant data gathered from 100 Maltese soccer referees forming part of the Malta Football Referees Association. Included in this study there is a qualitative research with three top local referees and interviews with authoritative personalities in the refereeing sector. This investigation explores the way referees prepare themselves for the matches and the difficulties encountered in doing so. These barriers originate due to the lack of psychological aid given to the referees. Questionnaires and interviews confirmed that the lack of mental preparation may have negative repercussions on the match itselĀ£ Results suggest that instructions would be greatly appreciated along with guidelines to follow in case of difficulties. The research results suggest that although the Malta Football Association takes matters into consideration, referees need direction and help from the moment of enrolling till the end of one's career.
