Abstract: The study sets out to investigate the reading and writing abilities of students in Maltese state schools: two boys' and two girls', one school of each type from the North and the same from the South. Forms l and Forms 5 of each school, randomly selected, are studied for Ll interference in reading and writing through reading and writing test analysis. Consideration is also given to the pedagogy adopted by various teachers teaching either and/or both Forms, and the resources available in the school itself to make the teaching of English more motivating. Comparative statistics reflecting the findings are presented along with the conclusions drawn.
