Abstract: The aim of this study was to identify the major issues and contentions arising from support teaching, the learning difficulties which pupils are facing in primary schools, the roles of the support teacher, the partnership with parents and the introduction of IT with children needing support. Suggestions are given as regards the type of activities adapted for these learners. Chapter 1 explores the themes involved in the field of learning support such as in-class and withdrawal system and the ideal time to start this service. Recent definitions are also included. Chapter 2 looks into the common characteristics of children with learning difficulties together with the effects these have on their learning. Chapter 3 seeks to bring into perspective the various roles and qualities that a support teacher fulfils. The possible partnership between support teacher and classroom teacher is also analysed. Chapter 4 focuses on the need of building bridges between home and school. Suggestions are given together with an investigation of two home-based programmes which were carried out abroad. Chapter 5 investigates the introduction of I.T. in the primary schools. Benefits and shortcomings, in addition to an evaluation of various educational software currently used in schools, is included in this chapter. Chapter 6, 7 explore difficulties which children are faced with in reading, spelling and writing. Different approaches to meet such problems are discussed. Chapter 8 gives a whole repertoire of practical activities that the support teacher can make use of with children. Chapter 9 gives a description of the research methods applied in the whole study as well as an analysis and an interpretation of the interviews carried out.
