Exploring Mtarfa : environmental education through educational walks

Abstract

This project is aimed to introduce and encourage environmental education through educational walks in the Mtarfa Primary School. These walks are meant to help teachers infuse environmental education into [romary curriculum and helpt children appreciate the environment that is surrounding them. This methodology is based on the idea that the children should first appreciate their surroundings before they are taught abstract environmental problems. This dissertation is accompanied by by a Resource Pack of teachers in Mtarfa primary school. This pack features five themed walks that will help students from the Mtarfa area to familiarise themselves with the urban, natural and historical environment of their hometown. A set of pre-, on-site and post activities are included with every walk. Included in the Ressource Pack there is some historical and background information on various landmarks in Mtarfa. The teachers of the Mtarfa primary school gave important feedback while evaluating the Resource Pack. A series of recommendations on how environmental education and environmental educational walks can be infused through the primary curriculum follow te evaluation analysis.
