Abstract

This dissertation seeks to present a number of poems which are representative of the major Maltese modem poets and selected from every sphere of the poets' literary life. The purpose is to present a picture of the works written in the second half of the Twentieth Century in Malta as well as to present each poet with his personal characteristics which distinguish him from the rest. Every poet is introduced by a short biography. This is followed by a critical comment and by a personal as well as a critical bibliography. The whole work is introduced by a general critical presentation of the literary period from which the poets were chosen; the social background, the new literary trends, the major themes, and style. All this is done with reference to American and European modem literature which surely left its mark on the poetry that sprung in the Sixties in Malta.
