A study of the leisure time of a sample of Maltese secondary school pupils

Abstract

This study was conducted by two B.A. Education under graduates taking Italian as their main subject at the Faculty of Education at the University of Malta. The main aim was to discover whether a relationship exists between the choice of Italian as a language subject at Secondary School level and the leisure activities of a sample of such students in representative Maltese Secondary Schools. A secondary aim was to study the relationship between the favourite kinds of leisure of the parents and such students, and the choice and participation in leisure activities of their respective children. The study is based on the results of a questionnaire given to a sample of Form 4 and Form 5 classes, boys and girls regarding various aspects of students' leisure activities. It resulted that no significant relationships exist both in the first and second instances. The study also discusses specific kinds of leisure, the most popular being: sports, reading and watching television, and cinema, as well as the possible forms of leisure liable to appear in the near future in Malta, as suggested by the respondents themselves. The conclusive chapter also discusses the possibility of their introduction to Malta in the light of Malta's cultural/economic background.
