Abstract: The aim of this research study is to try to show/understand why positive approaches, as opposed to punishment can prove effective when used with children exhibiting behavioural problems. In this respect work has been carried out with two Year IV boys, who attend a State School. The study included an in-depth semi-structured interview with six teachers and the two sets of parents concerned, a case study of these two children, as well as a period of direct observation in the classroom and during the lunch break. In this regard data was gathered and sometimes recorded as well, organised and finally analysed qualitatively. Thus it was possible to give explanations of findings regarding positive reinforcement and how and when these have been used to improve behaviour. The main goal of interventions proposed is always to initiate a process aiming at behaviour changes after a specific period of time, through a systematic approach which focuses on reducing and if possible stopping undesirable behaviour without having to resort to punishment. Finally conclusions and recommendations were made so that teachers faced with such an environment would be able to manage the class in a constructive manner.
