The study of education in a specific culture certainly contributes to educational thought in general, which is concerned with the people's holistic development, in their attitude to life and their actions. This dissertation aims at investigating Islamic educational thought which is based on the theological, anthropological, psychological, ethical and epistemological concepts of life. It is hoped that a reading of this dissertation will give a good understanding of Islamic educational thought as it developed throughout the ages. This work aims at demonstrating how education in Islam was not an independent area but grew out from the complex experience of whole generations who were also influenced by "non-religious" philosophical thought. Finally it attempts to discuss some authors who propose strategies bent on meeting the challenges of modernity.en_GB
