dc.description.abstract | An analysis of the 'General' and the 'Options' Geography Syllabi reveals that rivers and related water-flow processes are frequently included in these works. Most of these entries, while intentionally drawn from various countries, can nonetheless be related to local situations by showing an analogy with the Maltese wied (valley) environment. Widien represent common local landforms which are much under-valued in their potential as sites for out-of-classroom activities. Consequently, the aim of this dissertation is to highlight the value of widien for fieldwork by presenting a set of four worksheets. These are presented to tackle the components of the wied system, the drainage channel, the vegetation and soil as well as the threats and conservation measures. For every topic, two sets of worksheets are presented; one for lower forms and the other for higher forms. Every set of worksheets includes activities to be done before, during and after the fieldwork. A variety of activities that are adequate for every wied type is additionally presented in table form and the possibility of having fieldworks in river valleys and wadis abroad is suggested. To maximise awareness of widien and their characteristics, a set of four PowerPoint presentations is also provided to be done before the fieldwork. Original maps and photos accompany the discussion. It is hoped that these will enhance the teacher's will to do fieldwork in widien, thus increasing awareness and appreciation of this landform. | en_GB |
