Abstract: Developmental delay can be mild, moderate, severe or profound. It can be a characteristic of various syndromes, such as Down Syndrome, Fragile X Syndrome and Williams Syndrome (Burack, 1990, as cited in Keogh & MacMillan, 1996). This study focuses on the school experience of four male students manifesting mild to moderate developmental delay independently of other syndromes. The methodology used consisted of observations and interviews with the students, their parents, facilitators and teachers. The four students in our study were somewhat sheltered in a primary school environment where some kind of support was given. This study has shown that once these students pass on to a secondary school, they feel lost and are not able to cope with the demands of the curriculum and the new environment. They need regular and professional support to be able to cope with their peers. In fact, the three boys aided by a facilitator felt more protected in the school environment than the boy without a facilitator. This study has proven that the facilitators' aid has improved the boys' school experience. However, such an experience can be more productive if the whole concept of inclusion is widened. Inclusion in the mainstream is beneficial but it would certainly be more effective if adaptive behavioural skills and creative therapies form part of the school's agenda. This would certainly be the gateway towards the boys' self-fulfilment as members in society.
