Abstract: Part l deals with an item analysis of all the three papers: Arithmetic, Algebra and Geometry of the MATSEC May 1993 Mathematics Examination. This analysis was based on the total number of scripts of the 1399 candidates who sat for this examination. Each item of all the three papers was discussed based on its facility and discrimination indices and on observations from the candidates' scripts. Part 2 provides an analysis on achievement by gender and by type of school. Sex differences in favour of males were found to be statistically significant for the population as a whole and for the Junior Lyceum candidates. Differences did not reach statistical significance in Area Secondary and Private School sectors. The different educational sectors were also compared in terms of the number of candidates who sat for the examination and the quality of the grades achieved.
