dc.description.abstract | Performance management is a critical function of human resource management in any organisation. In this study the researcher sought to identify the key features of effective performance management and appraisal systems, initially through a literature review. The researcher then opted to carry out a case study in a local audit institution in order to assess a performance review system in a real live environment. A number of critical aspects of performance management emerged from the study which then formed the basis for questionnaires sent out to performance appraisers and appraisees within the above mentioned audit institution. The main aim of the surveys was to establish the gap between what the participants perceived to be critical features of an effective performance management system for their organisation, and which features formed part of the existing performance review process. The results showed that there was particular interest toward introducing more performance management features such as performance management related training for appraisers, frequent feedback to employees on their performance and employee development plans. The researcher then compiled a series of related recommendations that would assist the organisation in addressing the gaps identified in the study. A list was drawn up as an action plan for the organisation to utilize should it decide to shift from the current performance review process to a system with a greater number of performance management features. | en_GB |
