Abstract

During the twentieth century the Maltese language has witnessed a giant step forward towards its acquisition of a national status, as well as in the prestigious dcvelop1nent of literary works and linguistic studies. When we talk about personalities who have struggled to inject the much needed boost in the emancipation process of our language, we tend to forget to bring forward the bold initiatives taken by various voluntary organizations who have appeared decade after decade, and who deserve to be acknowledged in the history of the Maltese language. This dissertation seeks to record and pay tribute to their significant contribution in the development of our language in the last century.
