Abstract: The work in this dissertation is basically divided into two parts i.e. a section dealing with theory and another section devoted to the practical side. In the first section, I have attempted to describe the notions "culture/civilisation" by emphasising their importance in the teaching of a foreign language. I also discussed various practical means of motivating the learner towards the study of civilisation. On the other hand, the second section of my dissertation consists mainly of practical work. This based on a study of an article written by Janine Courtillon ("La notion de Progression Appliquée: à l'Enseignement de la Civilisation" Le Frangais Dans le Monde N. 188). Whereby she regroups all traits of' civilisation by using a global and cyclic approach.,. The entire analysis has been conducted by reference to. Books l and 2 of' the audio:-visual method La France En Direct (Paris, Hachette 1969 .. )
