Abstract: In this study the history of the local school is discussed against the background of the changing concepts of the curriculum and teaching methods. Other issues, such as teacher training, professionalism and the changing role of the teachers are also examined. The gradual development of the school in Malta was conditioned by many factors. More stress to its development was given during the 19th century when attention started to be directed towards popular education. Progress was however slow. The real dawn of change came m 1946 when the Compulsory Attendance Ordinance was promulgated. What led to compulsory education, official reports, different views and attitudes are also discussed. The present state of affai.rs is the result of a long series of attempts, educational and social reforms and political decisions. Contrary to what happened in the past, progress and change in the last few decades have been swift and significant.
