The first year of teaching

he group under consideration for this research consisted of graduates who graduated as teachers in the B.Ed.(Hons.) course in the year 1997. The occupation of these graduates was found. From a sample of 50 teacher graduates only 23 teachers accepted to collaborate. The aim was to obtain information regarding their experiences during their first year of teaching and hence an indication could be obtained if teachers where satisfied in schools. From our research we found that first year teachers felt a big gap between the theory learnt at University and the reality faced in the classrooms and in the staff room. First year J teachers also mentioned the fact that additional help should be provided during their first year of teaching since the present system does not provide any induction program which · will equip novice teachers with skills and techniques to survive in the first year of teaching.
