A handbook of activities for teaching English in a Year 2 state school

Abstract

The aim of this study was to compile activities suitable for teaching English as a second language at an introductory level. This was done so that teachers would have readily accessible English activities related to six topics. Prior to developing the topics, interviews were conducted with three Year 2 teachers in a state school, to establish how English is taught. Two of the six topics were then delivered by one of the teachers to her year 2 group of children. Feedback about the activities was obtained through classroom observations, from the questionnaires completed by the teacher and from feedback obtained from the children. The evaluation indicated that children enjoy learning English through topics, storytelling, poems and songs.
