Abstract: | The aim of this dissertation is to discover the factors that determine the choice of geography as an optional subject at secondary school level. A blend of interviews and questionnaires were employed to investigate the reasons behind the choice of geography whether gender issues, family pressures, teachers' influences, liking for the subject, etc. Furthermore, comparisons of the outcome of the questionnaires were carried out to determine the different attitudes both in secondary and junior lyceum schools as well as church schools. To enhance our study in this area, the choice of geography at sixth form level was also analysed. In conclusion, methods to enhance and motivate students to further their studies in geography are also suggested. Contrary to what was expected, factors such as family background, teacher's influence, job aspirations, gender and age do no seem to influence the students' choice of subject. However, it was found out that the main motivators behind the popularity of geography were interest and like for the subject. |
