Abstract: This dissertation attempts to evaluate political caricatures as a means, among others, to further developmental education in a society · where the media has an extensive influence. Chapter One presents a literature review about the validity of history teaching, the importance of the visual and the media as a socialising agent. The potential of cartoons and caricatures as a communicative medium and as an educational tool will also be evaluated. The following chapter provides a brief history of early Maltese cartoonists, while Chapter 3 is dedicated to the historical analysis of the period concerning this dissertation, 1955-1962. Chapter 4 is an evaluation, analysis and conclusions of a Field Test, conducted by the author, to evaluate the hypothesis whether caricatures can facilitate, enhance and transmit more effective and enjoyable historical understanding. The conclusion to the dissertation is presented and the appendices will provide a set of workbooks on different topics concerning the historical period under study.
