This dissertation is based on a number of texts, which depict modern Italy and the way of living of the Italians, taken from popular Italian magazines and established literary works. Each text is accompanied by varied structured exercises that are intended to develop in the students of Italian comprehension and decodification strategies of reading. These exercises are classified into three sections: the first section focuses on the general comprehension of the text; the second section analyses the various linguistic elements found in the text; whilst the third section aims at verifying comprehension and at guiding the pupils towards a more creative use of the Italian language. Our work is carried out on the same lines as the works previously undertaken by M. T. Borg and S. Zammit (1990), and K. J. Formosa (1991). This we did in order to ensure a complete and varied learning programme for all the students learning Italian at Secondary level.en_GB
