Abstract: | The aim of this study was to explore the perceived experienced benefits of an eightweek mindfulness course amongst participants. Mindfulness-based interventions are structured group programmes that employ mindfulness practices and concepts to instruct individuals on how to pay attention to the present moment in a non-judgemental, compassionate way. In previous studies, mindfulness has been associated with reductions in stress, anxiety and ruminative thinking, enhanced psychological health and life satisfaction, and an increase in levels of vitality, empathy and self-compassion. This research adopted a qualitative approach, exploring the individuals’ experiences following attendance of the mindfulness course. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six participants. Data was analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Four main themes emerged, namely: ‘Wherever You Are, Be There Totally’, ‘Recognizing one’s Humanity’, ‘Mindfulness, A Vehicle of Change’ and ‘Moving Towards Harmonious Social Connections’. The findings of this research are consistent with existing literature suggesting that mindfulness and the application of its concepts and knowledge may assist a broad range of individuals to enhance their psychological health and well-being. The study concludes with recommendations for further research. |
