Abstract

This dissertation deals with some historical and thematical aspects of the modern Egyptian short story. The first part of the research shows how this literary genre came into being in the Arab world, especially in Egypt, through the influences of European literature and culture. Then it made some progress through the publication of journals and reviews, some of which are mentioned in the discussion on the initial v10rks of the main exponents of the modern. Egyptian short story. The second part of the dissertation concentrates on some of the main themes of the modern Egyptian short stories. Some information about certain aspects of Egyptian society and politics is also given so that one understands and appreciates better the short stories included in this study. It is hoped that this work motivates its readers to pursue further studies in both the Arabic language and the modern Arabic literature.
