Abstract: | This dissertation looks at the current situation of Maltese secondary schools regarding exclusion as a means of punishment. It hopes to ameliorate the situation where eventually students, particularly those in risk of exclusion, will be engaged more productively in all areas of school life. It describes the function and application of the Legal Code of Behaviour, it analyses the reasons for exclusion and the effects as a cause of such a policy. The dissertation underlies how schools are currently handling exclusion and whether there is an attempt to reduce or prevent it and to foster inclusion. It is also provided with three case studies of students who have experienced exclusion several times. The study incorporates interviews with people who have been affected by exclusion and interviews with those who could offer a valid opinion regarding the matter. Particular importance is placed on valuing the domain of personal experience in the life of the school community. The dissertation suggests ways in which exclusion might become a priority focus of further development in school policies. |
