Abstract: To date little research has been done on the determinants of food choice by Maltese children. The aim of this study was to look for key factors that influence Maltese Primary School children in choosing certain foods rather than others. Main areas focused on were the home and family, the school environment and the media - particularly television. Two original questionnaires were developed and distributed amongst children of Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 and their parents in different Maltese Primary Schools. Also, a mini survey was conducted were television advertisements aired during children's peak hours were recorded from several TV channels. Overall results indicated that Maltese children are aware of which foods are . 'good' for health, however, they do not always eat the right food because of many circumstances. It is recommended that the school system and the media are used more effectively to guide and enable children and their parents in making healthier food choices.
