Abstract: This study defines 'literacy', 'illiteracy' and their implications. It focuses on the process of literacy acquisition and the factors that contribute to literacy failure. These findings are compared and contrasted with the results of the questionnaire that was administered to teachers who are teaching the lowest year 6 state school classes. Chapter four outlines the results of the standardised spelling test, analyses the level of its difficulty and discusses the children's spelling performance and attainment. Chapter five reviews the literacy resources that are available in these classes and puts forwards different teaching strategies that can improve the spelling attainment of children. The final chapter puts forward the general conclusion of this study and the recommendations that are to be taken into consideration.
