Abstract: This work consisted of two separate studies concerned with seating arrangement and its effect on pupil classroom behaviour. In the first study the effect of two different classroom desk arrangements on children's on-task and disruptive behaviour was examined. Two mixed classes of ten year old children were observed and an ABA reversal design was employed, each class being observed for eight 30-minute sessions during each phase. No change in pupil behaviour was observed to occur with a change in desk arrangement. The second study examined the effect of mixed versus same-sex arrangements in two mixed classes of nine year old children, seated in a rows arrangement. Children's on-task and disruptive behaviour were observed separately. An ABAB reversal design was employed with both classes, each class being observed for three 30-minute sessions during each phase. The change of same-sex pairs to mixed-sex pairs was found to have a positive effect on behaviour, so that mixed-sex seating was accompanied by an increase of pupil on-task behaviour and by a decrease in the rate of disruptions.
