Abstract

This work is aimed to discuss the relation that exists between poetry and the history of one's country, and how poetry was used as a means in different times and in various countries to voice the popular demands and unrest. In the introduction I have included a brief account on the beginning of poetry writing and how it developed in later years to attain literary standards. This work is divided into four chapters where I discussed the development of Maltese literature and included selections of poetry from Gan Anton Vassallo, Guze' Muscat Azzopardi, Richard Taylor, Dun Karm, Ninu Cremona, Ruzar Briffa, Anton Buttigieg and Karmenu Vassallo. My selection ranges from poetry inspired by the historical and glorious times of our country nourished by sentiments of nostalgia. I have included quotes from various poems mentioned in my study and finally I have given a list of Bibliography.
