Abstract: An initial theoretical review looks at what the picture represented from its beginning to the modern times. It deals with role the image played in the various teaching methods of the last centuries and its influence on the textbooks. Examples showing this will be mainly based on French textbooks. The study gives particular attention to the ways of interpreting pictures and the shows that for a number of reasons, people see the same picture in different ways. Focus is put on what is going on in Maltese schools as regards picture interpretation in class as well as in the oral examination of various foreign languages. Besides, one gives a look at elements that are hindering the implementation of the task in a number of languages. The dissertation proposes a pack of lesson plans which help French teachers in tackling picture interpretation with their students. Attached, there is also a CD which includes various types of pictures which can be used either in relation to or independent of the textbook being used in class.
