Abstract: | This study focuses on ten primary school pupils coming from two schools in the year 5 low streamed classes that are finding difficulties in literacy skills. The main research tools used were participant observation and interviews. Parental and family influences, which can influence the quality and quantity of pupils' literacy experiences, were delved into. This research also looked into the practices of the educational system. Methods of teaching reading, streaming and its consequences and any other factor, which could contribute towards illiteracy, were explored. This information was supported by interviews carried out with heads of schools, class teachers, mothers and with the pupils themselves. Data analysis is presented in three parts: the home environment, the school environment and the pupils. Finally, an analysis of this data and how these have negatively or positively influenced the pupils' learning is presented. It was finally recommended that teachers, parents, the community, government, publishers and the media should all take responsibility for bringing change in the state of reading education. |
