Abstract: This thesis involves a study of foreign language teaching in this particular case, Italian - in bilingual countries as well as in Italy, especially where the dialect is still very much in use. Special attention has been given to methods of language teaching to Primary School children. The Maltese situation is also considered. The thesis is subdivided in five chapters, each tackling a particular situation or condition of foreign language learning. The first chapter is primarily theoretical since it discusses studies which have been carried out regarding the teaching of a foreign language to very young children. Consequently the other chapters present the experiments and also the actual situation of Italian as a foreign language in several countries, including Italy. Finally the teaching of Italian in Malta is discussed, taking into consideration how foreign language teaching is tackled in the countries mentioned before.
