Abstract: Munxar, one of the smallest villages of Gozo, lies to the South of the island between Xlendi Valley and the village of Sannat. Up to 12 December 1957, the historic date when Munxar became a parish, the village had always been considered as forming part of the neighbouring village of Sannat. From this day onwards, Munxar was considered as a village in its own right. This dissertation investigates the origins, growth, development and present state of the village. It describes its social, cultural and religious background and attempts to delve into the community's self-awareness as an autonomous entity. The work here is based both on primary and secondary sources as well as on information gleaned through familiarization with the community. Documentation includes official reports from both government and ecclesiastical bodies and other works related to the history of Gozo. A field survey and interviews served to feel the pulse of the community and to get a glimpse of the village from inhabitants' view point.
