Abstract: | The purpose of this dissertation was to find out what has actually influenced Form 3 students (in Junior Lyceums) and Form 4 students (in Area Secondary) to choose Computer Studies as an option. By doing so, it was possible to find out whether there were any influencing factors during the selection and what students anticipated to learn during the course. This information was elicited through a questionnaire to pupils in Junior Lyceums and Area Secondary schools who had just made their choice of subjects in Form 2 and Form 3 respectively. Form 5 students who were nearing the end of the computer course were interviewed to see their reactions about the subject and whether they intend to continue their Computing studies further. This study has shown that gender-stereotypes did not affect the pupils who were studied in making their choice. The most commonly stated reason for choosing Computer Studies as an option was to help them find a job in the future. The respondents have also shown that when making their choice, they either decided on their own or else they consulted their parents. This dissertation highlighted the fact that not all pupils are aware of the difference between ICT and Computer Studies. From the interviews carried out, it seems that Form 5 pupils seem satisfied with their choice. However, they consider the subject to be quite difficult. |
