Exploring biotechnology in Malta : a multimedia courseware package

Abstract

This dissertation consists of an interactive multimedia programme about biotechnology in Malta and an accompanying user guide with instructions to help the user to make the best possible use of the programme. "Exploring Biotechnology in Malta" takes the form of a trip around Malta were the user clicks on a particular place on the map and along with Oiiy, the main character of the programme, is taken to that particular site. Within the site the user can choose any item s/he would like to view and know about. This multimedia package is tailored for secondary level pupils taking Biology. However the design and the way the programme is set up does not exclude its use by those whose age falls in a different range or have no background in biology. A number of students and student-teachers were invited to evaluate the multimedia programme. The feedback obtained was quite positive, showing that the students are greatly interested in biotechnology in real life and the development of similar productions help them to learn more and in a better way.
