Although man is known to be the most perfect creature, because he gathers in himself nearly all the perfections of the other beings and so to say unites in himself heaven and earth, being a spiritual and a material creature; at the same time he is not complete and does not suffice for himself, but he is in need of the help both of the other human beings and of the other inferior creatures which serve him to attain the purpose for which he was created. For this reason man cannot live on his own, separated from all contact with other human beings. Left by himself man cannot attain the purpose of his life, he becomes the most lonely and miserable of all creatures: in one world, man must live together with the other human beings in order to help the others and to be helped by them, so that he may attain the purpose for which he is created. Hence Leo XIII in His Encyclical Letter Diuturnum illud, of the 29th June 1881, states: "It is man's nature to live in society. God is the author of society."en_GB
