Abstract: This dissertation commences with a brief overview concerning Francis Ebejer's work. Special reference is given to his play Menz. It further analyses the influences of realism and expressionism on Menz. As a preliminary step, the plot is discussed. Then, the so-called "Aristotelian Unities" are commented upon. The characters are grouped in three classes, according to their development in the play. Some are progressive, others are cyclic and the rest are static. Symbolic elements, which have a very important part in this play, are also discussed. The symbols are analysed in terms of, the objects which are presented bs the playwright, the situations which arise during the play and the dialogue of the characters themselves. By way of conclusion, this dissertation shows that the playwright projected Menz as a living symbol of post-Independence Malta.
