Abstract: The aim of this study is to identify the difficulties which children find when copying from print. The areas studied are spacing, reversals, legibility and name writing. 341 children (179 boys and 162 girls) from a Maltese State school were given a sentence to copy out first on ruled paper and later on blank paper. From the analysis of the children's scripts, it appears that the reversal's problem is not as great as teachers think it is. On the other hand, spacing is a problem for pupils in Year I. Both these problems are more common with boys than with girls. Children tend to make more errors when copying on ruled paper than when copying on blank paper.
