We have conducted literary research of books regarding spoken interaction and more specifically the topic of the dissertation. With the aid of empirical study we eventually found out how students develop skills concerning their communication strategies. The study helped us discover whether differences between the performance of French native speakers and that of Maltese students of French as a foreign language exist. The contrasts implied were derived from recordings and transcriptions of native speakers and Maltese students, where spontaneous and simulated French were spoken respectively. The study focused on students who are studying French at advanced level and for students at a Tertiary Level of Education. At such stage, students were expected to have acquired these skills since they are at an advanced level of study. Results showed that the conversations of Maltese students of French differed from those of native speakers. We proposed a set of activities that can be used in the classroom by a French teacher in order to encourage students to develop their communication skills.en_GB
