The rocks of Malta : a multimedia courseware package

Abstract

The aim of this dissertation is to provide a multimedia programme for students who are at the sixth year of primary school and the first two years of secondary school. "The Rocks of Malta" is a Multimedia Courseware Package about the geology of the Maltese islands. It also addresses the topics of earth formation, continental drift, the Mediterranean Sea and the geological time scale. Students can learn by interacting with the computer either by browsing through the information or by playing games. Video clips, text, sound and graphics form the main structure of the programme. It can be used by teachers before, during and after the explanation depending on the their choice. A teacher's manual is included in the package. A qualitative analysis was carried out with a group of student teachers in order to test the software. In this evaluation some important conclusions were drawn on how multimedia can help students and how it can be implemented in schools.
