Abstract: Research has shown that Art Education is not only essential to introduce students to the techniques and appreciation of art but also for the general development of the individual. Emphasis is laid on the crucial role of artists in schools. This will prove beneficial for both the artist and the student, as they each interact with one another to form a better understanding of each other, and the world they live in. The artistic background of the artists and their knowledge of art appreciation will prove an asset in their teaching. In this respect, the knowledge in their special field of art, (Anthony Calleja in painting and Sina Farrugia in ceramics) is not a limitation because their experience ranges further afield into other forms of expression such as sculpture, printing, cloth dyeing, and drawing. Both Anthony Calleja and Sina Farrugia adopt techniques and suggest projects to introduce students to the creative process. An important aspect of the role of artists in schools however, is the personal relationship between the teacher and the student, as the teachers seek to understand their students individually and socially by trying to bring out their unique qualities. This is done by creating an informal environment where students will be allowed to express themselves freely. They are encouraged to discuss, argue and to criticise their own work and that of others in an open and mature manner. The aim is to exchange views and stimulate one another. In this way teachers of art hope to develop the student holistically: artistically, emotionally and intellectually.
