Abstract: Physical Education has long been recognized of great value in the total development of the individual, and therefore for this same reason that it is, it is recognized in the Educational system of most countries, including Malta. The benefits that can be derived from Physical Education are-numerous, but these can be summarized in three broad aspects which are the physical, psychological and social aspects of sports. These values are dealt with in the first part of this book. In fact, one may say that the work is divided in two parts. The first part concerns the theoretical aspect since it is made up of research work concerning the numerous goals and objectives that a physical education programme seeks to inculcate (Chapter 1). The psychological aspect of physical education is treated in more detail in Chapter 2, where one finds an analysis of how physical fitness contributes to mental health and ability. This statement is also tackled in relation to some of the most effective methods of teaching Physical Education. The third chapter deals with the importance of adequate and satisfying physical training at the five to ten age group, from the sociological point of view. In the second part, the actual situation concerning Physical Education in the Primary School is illustrated very clearly by means of questionnaires distributed to over hundred teachers working in primary schools all over the island including Gozo. The result amongst other things, indicates that while teachers are conscious of the benefits derived from physical education they still tend to put (physical education) aside for various reasons some of which are out of their control (lack of adequate space and apparatus). Since parents are having a major say in the running of schools than was previously the case, the 7th chapter is devoted to their views concerning the matter. The last chapter is made up of various personal suggestions and proposals based mainly on the results of the teachers' and parents' questionnaire which if put into practice may improve the actual teaching of Physical Education in all our primary schools.
