Abstract

The aim of this dissertation is to analyse the present situation about the use of listening and speaking skills in Maltese, at the Primary level, from Kindergarten up to year three. This study consists of an analysis of the language being used by the pupils, the teachers' role in this particular sphere, as well as the influence and participation of the parents. The required information was gathered from a number of both private and state schools in Malta and Gazo. This empirical study, can throw light upon the actual situation and can be of help for designing a plan of practical activities in order to improve the local situation. It can also help further studies in this field. As this research indicates, greater importance should be given to these two significant language skills from all those responsible for the child's education.
