Abstract: This dissertation is a comparative study structured between the factors, literary and philosophical, which constituted the European movement of realism, and the narrative works of the Maltese writer Ġuże' Chetcuti. Its scope, therefore, runs from an introduction giving the fundamental aspects of realism, to conclusions showing to what extent Ġuże' Chetcuti followed the trends of realism. The comparative qualities of this study are based on three points of artistic reference: thematic motives, characterisation and environment. This dissertation also gives criticism of those repeated aspects within theme, character and environment, which make the novels of Ġuże' Chetcuti consistent with the artistic imitation of life particular to the novelist. In other words, it appreciates how constant Chetcuti is able to be from one novel to another, and how this gives a general direction of form and content to his art. The novels studied are: Id-Dawl tal-Hajja - 1957, Imhabba u Mewt - 1961, it-Tnalja - 1964, Nirien ta' Mhabba - 1967, L-Isqaq - 1971.
