Abstract: This dissertation studied how art is implemented in the education of children who are mildly, moderately or severely retarded. The benefits these children derive from art activities were explored. Art lessons for children with mental retardation in Special Schools, were observed. These observations were preceded by an extensive literature research, which provided the necessary background information. The findings were then analysed, identifying the benefits of art for children with mental retardation in the form of aims and objectives. The constraints were also described. Analysis of data showed that art helped children with mental retardation develop motor and similar skills, improved self-esteem and assisted in personal and cognitive development. On the other hand a number of shortcomings inhibit the use of art's full potential for these children. Some recommendations for further development of this area have been included.
