Abstract: The main aim of this thesis is to establish the themes most frequently talked about by children in the five to seven year old age group. During the course of a scholastic year we have recorded a representative sample of these children in class. The transcriptions of these recordings brought out the generic themes and specific words used by the children. One can see the important role played by the children's parents and other adults on the children's linguistic development. Other factors which influence the way children speak are the experiences they pass through, the environment in which they operate, the books they read and the interaction with their teachers.
