Abstract: A preliminary comparative review of e-learning platforms showed that although the open-source platform Moodle is one of the best currently available, its strengths lie mostly in the area of asynchronous-mode course delivery and is somewhat deficient when it comes to supporting synchronous communication between teachers and learners. Specifically, it lacks an integrated free open source interactive "whiteboard". These features are essential in synchronous learning environments such as those used for distance learning. As a result this dissertation was focused on the creation of a synchronous e-learning environment software module for Moodle. The main part of the software developed was centred on the creation of an interactive "whiteboard" and text chat.
