Abstract: The main purpose of this study is to investigate the predictive validity of the Junior Lyceum Entrance Examination ( JLEE) one year after. The study also examines whether there are sex differences and age differences in scholastic performance. The sample consisted of 1,203 pupils, 720 girls and 483 boys. The grades of the JLEE held in 1991 and the annual scores of the same pupils in 1992 were recorded. The five subjects were Maltese, English, Mathematics, Religion and Social Studies. Results show that: the JLEE is a reasonable good predictor of performance in Maltese, English, Maths and Religion (+0. 6), while Social Studies had the lowest predictive value (0.3). Sex differences: girls consistently outperformed boys in the five subjects, both in the JLEE and Form I Annual JL sessions. Age differences: no relationship was found between age and performance in the five subjects both in the JLEE and JL Form I Annual sessions.
