Abstract: This dissertation proposes to analyse the performance of the candidates in their answers to the questions involving the comprehension, the translation from English into Arabic, the translation from Arabic into English or Maltese, and the composition set in the November/December 1990 session for Arabic School Leaving (75 candidates) and for Ordinary Matriculation (71 Candidates). Despite the fact that this analysis is restricted to 146 scripts, it is hoped that enough evidence was found to prove that the influences and interferences 9f the Maltese language on Maltese students of Arabic occur in different linguistic levels. This analysis includes phonology and orthography in chapter one, morphology in chapter two, syntax in chapter three, and the lexis in chapter four. Finally, the general conclusions were exposed in chapter five. The Maltese student has many advantages because of the great relationship between Maltese and Arabic. He is at the same time in the disadvantage of likely trapfalls. Maltese students must, therefore, have a special training· in the study of Arabic.
