Abstract: The aim of this dissertation was to develop a framework for a portfolio that can be implemented in a Form 3 physics classroom. The research basically consisted of three parts. The first part involved carrying out a review of the literature to identify different types of portfolios and their use in physics teaching. The second part involved developing a template for a physics portfolio. This included identifying the skills which a Form 3 physics student should have acquired at the end of a course of studies, identifying a number of tasks to show that these skills have been achieved and also developing teacher assessment sheets, student reflective writing sheets and finally assessment criteria for the portfolio. The third and final part of this research work consisted of an evaluation of this framework by a number of physics teachers. From the comments obtained from teachers a number of conclusions could than be drawn in order to outline recommendations for the implementation of such a portfolio in the Form 3 physics classroom.
