Abstract: The Gozo Malta ferry service is a key player in the social, economic and cultural progress because it provides a vital link between Malta and Gozo. The service development from the beginning of the British rule in Malta (1800) till the present times (2000) is analysed in this dissertation through historical documents, interviews, reports and other printed material related to the service. In this dissertation, we have focused on: the service offered by the Speronara and later by the Gazo boat; the introduction of the steamships and their major contribution; the major tragedies in the ferry service; berthing facilities at Mgarr harbour and problems associated with it; ports of call and finally the upgradings and the express service. In addition we have compiled a catalogue of the major ships in service, changes in fares and timetables of the ferry and express service and detailed statistical pattern showing the amount of passengers and cars ferried together with the number of trips performed in these last 21 years. These are presented on tables and plotted on graphs. The whole is complimented by colour and black and white photos together with new terminal and berth areas plans.
