Knowing your surroundings : promoting informal environmental education through walks

Abstract

This dissertation focuses on promoting environmental education through a process of informal learning through a series of walks around a selected sample of localities in Gozo. The pack includes a) a set of 13 leaflets outlining the itinerary of the walks and the important sites, b) a Guidebook 'Walks around Gozo which gives more detailed information about the sites, and c) an identification manual 'Countryside Encounters~ of flora and fauna found in the sites visited. The dissertation explains how a sustainable culture can be achieved through an interdisciplinary and a learner centered approach to environmental education, mainly through interaction with the community. The dissertation also provides detailed description of the methodology adopted in the production of the pack and the results of the pack's evaluation by a number of prospective users.
